How long it takes to cross the English Channel on a sailboat?
Hi, as you can tell from my question I am not a wise Mariner. I'm writing a disaster novel, the climax of which 4.6 are survivors fleeing from a wrecked England in despair, heading to France on a ship commanded from a boat on the south coast (perhaps Poole or Weymouth). Assuming you took the boat closest I could and all stacked in a (safety or comfort without taking into account-that are desperate and in a deadly blast) and set sail for France, how long does the trip, very close, if they were above target landfall in any Instead of the French coast? Hours? Days? Suppose you got lucky with the currents and navigation, etc. Just a ball park figure please use sail power alone! How would figure that if you take a drive, maybe a medium sized ship at low speed? A sports / speedboat tank capacity to cross the channel? I know there is his luck, but please try to give me a simple answer, thanks!
Poole Weymouth or the best destination port of destination is Cherbourg. Channel Tides blow from left to right to left to navigate through the canal is actually quite simple, but the tide does not run fast off Cherbourg and Weymouth. Survivors 4-6 means at least a modest sailing boat 30 feet or a motor boat of 25 feet. This sailboat that an average of 4 to 5 knots less luck with the wind in which case a good large wind could give up to 8 knots. That would take eight hours to 12 hours faster than slower. A speed boat no small engine can carry enough fuel to cross and as we are talking about seizing what is available does not expect a small boat to be there by far the fuel tanks. If it were extreme and got hold of a fast motor cruiser, 30 to 40 feet and fed, then one could get through two to 3 hours.
