Sailing from Florida to Caribbeans and other Islands?
I just recently picked up a cruising the world magazine and it has really sparked my interest. I am already going to Wyotech at Daytona for the Marine program and all it offers. I love the water and I love boats. It is the ultimate freedom and I was just wondering if there are any sailors out there that can tell me things I will need to accomplish before sailing around the outer laying islands around America. Do I need a passport? Do I need a captains license? I just wanna know because this is a future possibility and I know it is expensive but I have found great yachts for around 25 grand which is in my price range! Thanks for all the help!
You have a lot more problems than just getting a passport which you do need to RE-ENTER the U.S. For one thing, since you didn’t bother to tell us anything about this “yacht” you are getting for $25,000, that tells me you seem to think all boats are alike.. they are NOT and being ignorant of the difference CAN GET YOU KILLED. Just for the record.. YACHTS START AT 85 FEET.. anything smaller is NOT a YACHT and when people refer to their 25 footer as a “YACHT” that tells anyone who DOES know something about boats. that the person who thinks a 25 footer is a YACHT actually KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT BOATS OR BOATING.
I have a Topper Hermanson 35 foot steel sailboat (Sloop) that I have sailed around the Caribbean for years and have made the crossing from the U.S ot the Caribbean 5 times over the years.
The FIRST THING you need to do is LEARN HOW TO SAIL and do NAVIGATION and, after you have ONE YEAR of on the water experience, you can even get a CAPTAIN’S LICENSE.
If you plan to go cruising the Carigbena you need at least $1000 per month in OUTSIDE INCOME since YOU CAN’T WORK THERE other than Puerto Rico or the Amerikan Virgins.
