Yacht Designing And Planning

Yacht building? Where do you build one?
Hello , I was looking around at Yacht design plans for fashioning one out of steel , aluminum, fiberglass etc. and was wondering when you start building them at like 70+ feet with a 20ft beam, where do you build them? I don’t think anybody would be able to transport somthing like that from Private property. I thought about ship yards but , can’t seem to find any that rent out spots. I would like to build one sometime (Yes I’m very serious) and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of Where to PHYSICALLY build one. (Not looking for plans, already found ones I like ) Thanks. Oh yeah I live in Florida, CENTRAL florida lol
James…
I build boats. I have been building my own boats for 45 years. The last six have all been between 36 & 48 feet. My last two (which I live on one of them full-time) have both been 44 feet.
What you are contemplating in a 70′ vessel is a ten (10) year project. That, is assuming you devote 6 hours or more per day to it – every single day of the week, 365 days a year.
If you are indeed 17 or 18 years old… you will never finish such a boat building project. I guarantee it. I know because I have two sons… and while building “their” boats… everytime their girlfriends called – they were gone for the rest of the day. It wasn’t until my oldest was 30 years old, that he was able to devote his time from start to finish, inorder to build his own 30 foot sailing sloop – and that took him 4 years with much of me, and some more help from his younger brother.
In addition, a 70 foot plus vessel is too much boat. You don’t need it, can’t afford it, and won’t enjoy it half as much as a boat half that size.
If you cruise the Internet for all those boaters who are living on their boats and spending time in Paradise or sailing around the world… you will discover very few of them are doing it in vessels larger then 39 feet – and every experienced boater knows there is good reasons for this.
Every experienced boater knows that if you really want to get away from the dock… Your boat must be the smallest, most simple vessel you can comfortably live on, and handle all by your self. Anyone “out there” cruising around in Paradise today… is doing so because they understand that secret to success is NOT going to be found in the boat that shows the world how far you’ve come… but in the smallest, simple boat that will get you where you want to go and safely back again.
When “egg heads” come on here asking about 70 and 100 foot boats… that’s how we immediately know they are “egg heads” and not really boaters.
And I will be happy to eat my words on that, the day that either Tiger Woods, Bill Gates, Paul Allen, or Ted Turner show up here asking questions.
My Dad always said to me… “The future is yours. While you can’t change the wind, you can always adjust your sails.”
If you really want to realize this dream… I strongly suggest you adjust your sails.
Happy & Safe Boating,
John

PS. Laura Dekker will soon become the very youngest to circumnavigate the globe alone. The 14-year-old who tried to do it last year, was given her freedom to go from Dutch authorites this month, and now plans to leave on her solo voyage Aug 4th, and she will be doing it in her 39 foot ketch “Guppy”.
