History
Pennant of the Catholic Monarchs (until 1492)
Standard of the Crown of Aragon
Standard of the Crown of Castile
Although the concept of a flag national as we understand it today does not yet exist in the Middle Ages, the true symbol of nationhood was the Royal Shield. Are frequently made by other flags different full of images and symbols that represent all the values that the troops or the King championed.
The Standard of the Catholic Monarchs
In Spain, the medieval kingdoms that merged in the sixteenth century had its own symbols and their armed heraldric used to display their own flags and standards both in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, where the crowns of Aragon and Castile had their areas of influence. The flag of the Crown of Aragon (the Senyera in Catalan) was a yellow flag with four red stripes (the same as the current flag of Catalonia and basically the same as Valencia, Aragon and the Balearic Autonomous communities in Spain, or Roussillon, France). The Crown of Castile as the ultimate union between the kingdoms of Castilla and León in 1230, used a flag quartered alternating Castilian (Gules, a tower sable and Ajour Mazon blue) emblems and Leon (silver, a lion rampant purpure crowned with gold, and armed langued gules). Aragonese and Castilian flags and coats of arms merged when the Catholic Monarchs created the new symbols of their personal union of the crowns in 1475. [Citation required]
Cross of Burgundy
Cross of Burgundy Flag
See also: Flag of the Cross of Burgundy
It is one of the most important flags in the history of Spain. After the marriage of Joanna of Castile (Joanna the Mad), daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella, with the Archduke of Austria and later Philip I of Castile (Philip the Fair), was introduced between the Spanish flags a piece that, though of foreign origin, would later become the symbol par excellence Spanish, whatever the color of the cloth where it will be embroidered would be (mostly white and yellow). It is more properly called "Cruz de San Andrés (Saint Andrew's Cross) or" palette Burgundy. "This was the symbol of the Archduke. From the emperor Carlos I of Spain, the various armies use the flag with the Cross of Burgundy in different fields, first incorporated into the uniforms of Archers of Burgundy and later the rest of the army, painted on clothing to distinguish themselves in combat. Suddenly appeared also on the flags that until today, wear regimental Spain.
Both the Cross of Burgundy and the flag of the Catholic Kings were the symbols first European to reach the New World.
Habsburg Spain
Coronela flag during the reign of Charles I
Flags used by Hernan Cortes in Mexico
When the House of Habsburg to the Spanish throne in the mid 16 of each military company had its own flag which appeared usually the arms of his commander on the Cross Burgundy. To represent the King, who used to have another, the "Colonel", during the reign of Charles I (Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor) that was silk yellow (the imperial color) with the imperial crest embroidery.
When Philip II came to power, he ordered that in addition to the flags of every company, every third should be another yellow with the red cross of Burgundy. Cavalry units are the same flags, but smaller, Banners called for.
However, at this time the concept of a national flag as understood today did not exist, so the true symbol of nationality was represented by the royal arms. It is common to use other flags other than those mentioned, with several images or symbols. Some examples are the flag of St. James (Santiago el Mayor), green was the emperor himself during the conquest of Tunisia or the crimson used by Hernan Cortes in Mexico.
Felipe V and the Bourbon dynasty
Felipe V's military flag
Bourbon flag (1701-1748)
Bourbon flag (1748-1785)
The arms of Bourbon-Anjou were added in 1700 when Philip V became King of Spain. Introduced several changes in the royal arms. new king's arms were designed by the Frenchman Charles-Ren heraldists Pierre d'Hozier and Clairambault in November 1700. Philip V also changed the philosophy and design of the flags of Spain. He was the first to give Spain a unified command of their own to put in white cloth Cross of Burgundy and the Royal coat of arms. It was not yet a national flag, but a first "attempt" in line with similar attempts in other European nations.
The flags were arranged in three groups:
standard banner or Royal: crimson remained with the royal arms embroidered, the Golden Fleece and the collar of the Order of the Holy Spirit.
Armed Forces flag: the white color is reduced to the Cross of Burgundy and the royal arms.
Marina Pavilion: new white with real weapons.
The origins of the current shows: Carlos III

merchant flag (1785-1927)
In 1760 Carlos III modified the arms of the royal arms, removing the collar of the Holy Spirit, kept the Golden Fleece, and has added two new districts, which corresponds to the House of Farnese (six gold, blue lilies) and Medicis (blue disk with three fleur de lis gold and five red discs, all in gold).
The flag or military Coronela Spanish regiments was during the years of Bourbon, The Cross of Burgundy with different additions in each military unit based on its source territorial commander, etc.
When Charles III became King of Spain, noted that most European countries the flags that are used largely white, since they were often at war with each other, unfortunate confusion that occurred at sea, remains difficult to determine whether a vessel was sighted enemies until almost the last minute. For this reason, ordered the Minister for the Navy to present several models of flags for him, having to be visible from great distances. The Minister selected twelve sketches which showed the king. The flag that was chosen as a pretext for war is the direct ancestor of the current flag. It was a triband red-yellow-red, yellow stripe which is twice the width of the bands red, a unique feature that distinguishes the Spanish flag Triband Triband other European flags. The flag chosen as taught civil or marine use Merchant, meanwhile, consisted of five strips of yellow-red-yellow-red-yellow in proportions 1:1:2:1:1.
The origin the colors of the Spanish flag based on heraldic schemes of the Crown of Aragon. Ships Catalan used to use a standard red and yellow stripes. In the historical documents and cartographic drawings of the Middle Ages, the Catalan flag is seen in different ways, with two, three, four and five red stripes on a yellow background, sometimes vertical and sometimes horizontal. From the Catalan navy dominated much of the Mediterranean Sea, heraldry plans were fairly common, as in the Kingdom of Naples where Charles III had ruled as Charles VII before becoming the king of Spain in 1759. Some historians argue that the coat of arms placed the flag fell to the arms so that the Castilian flag representing the two realms: the yellow and red for Aragon, and emblem of the castle and the lion of weapons of Castilla.
The First Spanish Republic
Flag of the First Republic
The First Spanish Republic started with the abdication of February 10, 1873 of King Amadeo I, mostly as a result of the Hidalgo affair, when it was required radical government signed a decree against the artillery officers. The next day, February 11, the republic was declared by a parliamentary majority formed by radical Republicans and Democrats. Lasted twenty-three months, between February 11, 1873 and December 29, 1874.
First Republic had eliminated all real symbols (the royal crown and the dynastic coat of arms) of the coat of arms, and even discussed adopting a new tricolor flag, red, yellow and purple (the same one that was finally adopted by the Second Republic in 1931), the national flag at the end did not change and remained the same, but removing the crown from the top of the shield. Most of the old flags were reused by simply cutting the crown of the shield and sew a piece yellow fabric in the hole.
This period lasted until the brigadier Republic Martínez Campos was pronounced by Alfonso XII Sagunto on December 29, 1874, and the rest of the army refused to act against him. The government collapsed, leading to the end of the republic and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy with the proclamation of Alfonso XII as king.
The Second Spanish Republic
Flag of the Republic second with the Republican CoA.
April 14, 1931, the monarchy was overthrown and replaced by the Second Republic Spanish. Regime change was symbolized by a new tricolor flag of red, yellow and blue, instead of the previous red and yellow bicolor, found, in time, monarchy. The stated aim of the new blue band was to represent Castile and Leon in the colors of the flag, it was assumed that the red and yellow represents in the territories of the former Crown of Aragon, which has not been demonstrated.
Coat of arms of the Kingdom of Castile
The Republican flag was officially adopted on April 27 and officially given to the army on 6 May. Consisting of three horizontal stripes of equal width, red, yellow and indigo with the arms adopted in 1868 by the provisional government in the center (quarterly of Castile, Leon, Aragon and Navarra, Ent at the point of Granada, stamped by a mural crown between the two pillars of Hercules). Another novelty was the smallest dimension of this indicator in its military version of 1 mx 1 m.
Despite the emphasis given to the new flag as a symbol of the new regime, it is clear that the monarchy bicolor flag was not the one, as shown in Royal Decrees. When speaking of him, was described as "national flag", while there was a separate Royal Banner deprivation to the monarch in color, at the time of Elizabeth II of Spain was, curiously, indigo.
As for the addition of indigo to represent Castile in the national flag has been observed that Castilian flag was not indigo, but crimson. The confusion about the color of the Castilian banner was born in the nineteenth century, when a of the many secret societies that proliferated at the time, took the name of "Commoners" and adopted the color indigo as a symbol without relationship with the villagers true that, four centuries earlier, had raised the crimson banner in Villalar, Valladolid.

Flag of Spain under Franco (1945-1977)
The Spanish Civil War officially ended on April 1, 1939, when Francisco Franco announced end of hostilities. The Republican regime had been defeated and Franco became the undisputed leader of Spain. He ruled Spain until his death on 20 November 1975.
After the Spanish Civil War, despite the reorganization of the army, several sections of the army Bicolor flags continued his improvised in 1936, but since 1940 new banners began to be distributed, whose main innovation was in the San Juan Eagle Evangelista added to the screen. The new weapons were allegedly inspired by the coat of arms of the Catholic Monarchs made after the conquest of Granada by the Moors, but replacing the arms of Sicily by the Navarre and the addition of the Pillars of Hercules on each side of the shield of arms. In 1938, the columns were placed outside the wings.
On July 26, 1945 badges were abolished by decree commander, and in October 1911, a detailed regulation of the flags for Translation, which sets the flag model bicolor in use, but better defined detail, with emphasis on style eagle San Juan, until then a little chubby. The models established in this Decree were in force until 1977.
In this two more flags were usually displayed alongside the national flag: the flag Spanish Falange (three vertical stripes, red, black and red, black band being wider than the red and the symbol of the yoke and arrows in red located in the center of the bands black) and the Carlist flag (the cross of St. Andrew or red Burgundy cross on white) as representing the National Movement.
Franco Message transitional period
Flag of Spain from 1977 to 1981
Since the death of Franco, in 1975, until 1977, the flag continued to the regulation of 1945. On January 21, 1977 a new regulation was adopted that differed from the previous in the fact that the eagle had wings much more open ("stunned" eagle), the Pillars of Hercules came to be placed inside the wings, and tape A slogan, GREAT AND FREE (ONE, BIG and FREE) moved from the neck of an eagle and is on it. Not many flags with the shield were made. Finally, after restoration of the Bourbon on the Spanish throne in the person of King Juan Carlos I, the Spanish Constitution of 1978 was published in Article 42 in Article 12, said: "The flag of Spain is made up of three horizontal stripes: red, yellow and red, yellow being twice the width of each red.
The National flag of Spain, finally received its current shield in December 1981.
Unofficial flags
Flag of Spain with Osborne's bull
Sometime during the 1990, an unofficial version of the Spanish flag sporting a superimposed Osborne bull as a "shield" began appearing in stage football. This usage has become increasingly popular and this indicator is easy to see today in sports events, football or otherwise, to include a team Spanish, the player or the Spanish national team itself.
The flag of the Second Republic, with the blue strip, is often seen at rallies organized by people closely associated with the Spanish Communists or Republicans, such as anti-NATO demonstrations and other leftist causes. In this context, sports, this indicator is often perceived not only as an expression of republican sentiment rejected the monarchy, but as a reaction against Franco's regime, because the Franco regime design recovered old Spanish flag by force in the civil war and democracy once again Flag tricolor has not been restored.
